A Census of the distribution of Palmyrah trees in the Northern Province is to be taken with the aid of the Satellite. Training is being imparted to the members of the Board in this. The Palmyrah Board had undertaken activities needed for thie, said the Board’s Extension Mananger, K.Kopalakrishnnan.
Elaborating further on the Census he said that, 15 employees of the Board had been already trained in this. The training is being imparted with the assistance of University of Jaffna.
Formerly a Census taken pre war period, particularly before 1983, and it was estimated that 3,500,000 palmyrahs are there in the northern Province.
No Census had taken in the post war period to date.Thousands of Palmyrahs were destroyed in the war period. The total number now standing will be known at the tail end of the year.
Current Census is being taken with the arrangements of the Chairman of the Board, Dr.E.Sivasankar.
In a context where no Census had been done for several years now, this census is arranged, he said.
